Suburban Underground Vadders

Unfinished Lookout Tower

This has to be one of the strangest roadside anomalies I have seen in Austin. I was driving around South Austin one day determined to find something to explore. I was driving around on the chance that I would spot something interesting and spot I did. The first thing I saw was a large white cross at the top of a hill and then I spied something concrete and jagged looking poking out of the opposite side of this same hill. I turned around and tried to get a closer look.

This is how it can be seen from the road that passes by. The highlight on the left is the huge white cross and the highlight on the right is the concrete thingy.

Here is a little better of a close-up. At this point I couldn’t tell what it was but knew I had to find out. I took a side road that lead to the left hand side of the hill. There was another road to the right that lead to the church that was home to the huge cross but didn’t go any further. There were no cars in the parking lot so I decided to park and take a look around. There was a path at the edge of the parking lot that winded down the hill and past little wooden crosses. I went down that way and then started to head over to the concrete structure. It was actually a bit further than it had looked from the road. I never came across any fences but after a while it started looking like I was not on the church property anymore as there were water troughs and a deer blind among other things. For those who don’t know, a deer blind is a chair at the top of a tripod that can be covered in camouflage so an unsuspecting deer is blind to your presence and you can shoot them. At this point I felt like I was trespassing but did not see any proof. I was going to be careful in any case especially since I was by myself.
