The Plaza Hotel

Look at that stylish wallpaper. Looks like it might have received what they thought at the time was a facelift in the 70s which I understand was when it was nearing it’s last days as a hotel.

I believe this is a picture of the stairwell leading from the basement area to the first floor. The reflective surface under the handrail was a cheap alternative to actual mirrors. I would hope that the orange carpeting and light pink paint were not original.

I didn’t get any good pictures of the bar area except for this painting I found on the wall. The signature appears to be “GF 84” for the Viking and “JT 84” for the Viking boat. This is probably one of the strangest pieces of graffiti that I’ve seen.

Here is a good example of the style the place more likely had when it was first open. You can see that there was a good deal of detail that went into the ceiling. To the left was the bar and to the right is what I believe to be a ballroom or dining area.

I’m sure at one time this area seemed very nice and has certainly seen better days. The opening at the far end of the room leads to a narrow hallway. The restroom door is visible in the picture and as the hallway leads to the right it comes to what appears to be an office or storage room.

Scattered all over the floor and some shelves in the little storage area were wine lists with an Art Nouveau style cover.

Now we make our way to the front desk and entryway. Who the hell decided that pink was a good color to paint just about everything in this area?

Just opposite of the front desk was the main entryway that could have had a nice stained glass fanlight above the door. It looks like before they secured this area well enough, someone made this area his home.

Just to the left of the front desk is the elevator. Though it would have only had one floor to fall at most none of us thought it would be a good idea to step inside. The inside had nothing to offer but mold and peeling pain anyways and I can see that just fine from here thank you.
